My name is Marlene Chow, and I currently attend Gateway High School as a senior. I will be attending the University of California, Santa Cruz in the fall, with a major in psychology. What makes my high school different is the fact that it is amazingly tolerant and accepting of all races, genders, sexualities, religions and whatever else seems to divide a student body in other high schools. Perhaps what makes my school so wonderful to me is the fact that I have never once been discriminated or made fun of because I was different. If anything, my teachers and peers always encourage me to express my opinions and differences.
My high school has taught me things that I cannot even begin to express gratitude for. Before coming to Gateway, I used to be extremely close minded and would not hangout with anyone who was not my own race or had different religious beliefs. I did not even consciously realize that I was discriminating against other races and religions before I got to Gateway. On my first day as a freshman, I realized how many different types of people were going to be in the same school as me for the next four years, and I will admit that it scared me.
Over the course of my freshman, sophomore, junior and senior year, I learned that every single person in the world, whether they are white or black, Jewish or Christian, gay or straight, and tall or short, deserves a chance to speak their own opinions and to be free of judgment. I realized that some of the nicest, friendliest, and funniest people I had met in my life were people that were completely opposite of me, something I would of have never learned to open my eyes to if I had not attended Gateway.
I have participated in various clubs at Gateway that promote the wonderful differences that people have. Some of these clubs include the Gay-Straight Alliance, Girls Run Gateway, the Asian Pacific Islander club and the Poetry club.
The teachers and students at Gateway High School have left a lasting impact on my life and have changed my ways for the better. I’m proud of the fact that I have become an accepting, tolerant person, and that I can look at a person without seeing the color of their skin or the way they dress, rather, I see them for who they really are, for their personalities and wonderful traits. I am forever in debt to Gateway High School for teaching me things beyond biology and algebra.

A love so inblissably unreal.
I hate this.
And perhaps we are all fools for believing it to be so.
Fuck college. A certain college does not determine your success and accomplishments in the future; it is you, yourself, and your own accomplishments that will mold and shape your success in the near future. College is merely one of millions of factors in life that will be a part of who you are,…
